Main Street Pearl Raises Nearly $16,000; February Opening Planned

Main Street Pearl has raised $15,900 in its crowdfunding campaign, according to a post on the bubble tea shop’s Instagram account.

“Whoa! Where did the time go!? We were frantically reaching out to our networks, wrapping holiday gifts, celebrating the magic of the new year, and suddenly, it’s 2021 and our campaign was such an amazing success,” the Instagram post reads. “More than 130 individual backers, both on the Indiegogo and off, helped us start the new year off on the right track. We raised more than $15,000 to secure the lease, pay the rent, and start building out the space. Next up: Decorating, menu development, vendors, licensing, and dreaming of a Covid-free tomorrow.

“Already we’re centered on dine-in (well, on the patio) and carry out of unique, handcrafted beer, hard to find sparkling wines, the most decadent and surprising ciders, sake, and even dabbling in scratch seltzer (i.e. trying to find that perfect balance of bubbles, booze, sweet, and calories). On the non-alcoholic side, of course we’re putting together some amazing bubble tea, scratch soda, kombucha, and pour-over coffee.

“We want you to come in and browse at local art and pick up a book or a delightful gift while you are with us, and bring the kiddos allowance along so they can snag a treat from our kid-powered tuck shop.”

We reported in December that Leandra Nichola, a longtime Takoma Park resident, will open Main Street Pearl at 7050 Carroll Ave. serving bubble tea and other “bubble” drinks including beer, wine, cider, kombucha and scratch soda. The shop will replace Great Shoals Winery Tasting Room, which opened in Takoma Park in 2018 and closed at the end of 2020.

Main Street Pearl will feature local brands, reusable and compostable service items, and a vegan menu. Nicola plans to partner with nonprofit organizations and include events with other micro-entrepreneurs, according to an announcement from Main Street Takoma.

“The shop will offer a kid-preneur corner where youth team members will source, price, and sell small items inspired by the ‘tuck shops’ of Leandra’s youth in her hometown, Toronto,” the release said.

Main Street Pearl is planning a February 2021 opening, according to their website.
