The county will expand its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service to a full week of virtual events beginning tomorrow, Jan. 16, through Jan. 24, according to an announcement.
The Volunteer Center has put together a variety of service opportunities that can be done at home or at a safe distance.
Participants can create toys for service dogs, make blankets for hospice patients, send well wishes to COVID patients, send valentines to veterans or needy families, knit hats for premature babies, or work on other projects.
In addition, students can earn service learning hours for most projects except donations of items or funds. All activities are free, but space is limited for some projects and registration is required.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day Jan. 18, the county will present a virtual program at 5 p.m. titled “In His and Their Own Words: Reflecting Our Past While Forecasting the Future.”
The program will include four students reading personal letters addressed to “Dear Martin” in their own words, and County Council members will read excerpts from King’s speeches. In addition, the event will include music and dance performances by local artists and groups.
The program will be shown on County Cable Montgomery at Comcast/RCN Channel 6 and HD Channel 996 or Verizon Channel 30 and County Cable Facebook.
