Health Organization Expands Effort to Encourage Residents to Get COVID–19 Test

The African American Health Program has expanded its effort to encourage the county’s Black residents to get tested for the COVID-19 virus.

The organization is partnering with Black faith organizations such as the Islamic Society of the Washington Area and Black Greek letter organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity to help reach the targeted communities.

AAHP is providing participants in the free tests with on-site COVID-19 services including vaccine preregistration, groceries, and a pandemic “swag” box containing masks, gloves, a digital thermometer and hand sanitizer.

“More than 3,400 Montgomery County residents contracted COVID-19 last month. It remains critical for people to know their status so they can protect their loved ones and others,” Halisha S. Hunter, R.N., B.S.N., M.B.A, COVID–19 response lead for AAHP, said in a press release.

AAHP recently launched two video public service announcements produced by a partner organization, Fit Fathers, to encourage resident to get tested. One video features CBS Sports anchor James Brown while the second shows residents what they can expect when they visit a testing site.

AAHP last year launched a public information campaign with the tag line “Don’t Stress, Take the Test,” that will run through June.
