Second HAWK Beacon Installed on Fenton

The Traffic Division of the county’s Department of Transportation has installed a second High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk, also known as a HAWK beacon, on Fenton Street in downtown Silver Spring.

The additional HAWK beacon, approximately two blocks south of another one that was installed last week, is located at a crosswalk between Ulta Beauty and Whole Foods on Fenton St., which is between Ellsworth Dr. and Wayne Ave.

MCDOT’s Vision Zero initiative Work Plan for the 2022-23 Fiscal Year includes the installation of HAWK beacons to “provide additional protected crossing locations by installing new traffic signals and beacons, with priority installations in high crash risk areas with infrequent crossing opportunities. Pedestrian hybrid beacons can reduce pedestrian-involved crashes by 55%.”
