Mattress Firm Temporarily Closed

Mattress Firm has temporarily closed for remodeling, according to signage posted at the storefront.

Montgomery Business Scene reported yesterday that the store at 8701 Colesville Rd. in downtown Silver Spring had been cleared out, however, the closure is temporary and the store is being remodeled, workers at the location said today.

Signage announcing the temporary closure directs shoppers to their White Oak location at 11277 New Hampshire Ave.

Mattress Firm opened its downtown Silver Spring store in 2017. The storefront was formerly occupied by American Apparel, which closed all of its locations after filing for bankruptcy in 2015. American Apparel was acquired by Gildan Activewear in 2017, but the physical stores were not part of the acquisition.

In November 2015, the company agreed to acquire all outstanding equity interest in the holding company of Sleepy’s for about $780 million, according to company documents.

Steinhoff International, an integrated retailer that manufactures, sources and retails furniture, household goods and general merchandise worldwide, acquired Mattress Firm for $3.8 billion in September 2016.

Mattress Firm filed for bankruptcy in 2018, and confidentially filed for an initial public offering in September of this year, according to Reuters.
