Police Investigating Attempted Carjacking

Montgomery County Police say they are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in an attempted carjacking that occurred last Wednesday in Silver Spring.

“Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating an attempted carjacking that occurred in the 900 block of Philadelphia Ave. in Silver Spring on Wednesday, December 22,” reads an MCPD news release. “Detectives have released surveillance video of the Hispanic male suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

“At approximately 1:35 p.m., 3rd District Officers responded to the location for the report of an attempted carjacking that just occurred. The investigation by detectives determined that the male suspect approached the female victim who was standing by her vehicle. The suspect approached her and demanded her car key. The victim refused to give the suspect her car key. At that point, the suspect struck the victim in the chest and neck. A good Samaritan heard the struggle and intervened in the physical altercation by shouting at the suspect. The suspect then fled the scene without obtaining any property from the victim.

“Detectives reviewed the surveillance footage of nearby residences and obtained a physical description of the suspect. The victim described the suspect as an adult Hispanic male with a beard. The suspect was also carrying a messenger bag.

“Anyone with information regarding this suspect or this crime is asked to call the Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5070 or 240-773-TIPS, or contact Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the suspect. Callers can remain anonymous.”
