Investigators with the county Fire & Rescue Service arrested Mauro Anderson Rodrigues, 44, of Silver Spring on Dec. 28 in connection with several arson fires in the area, Pete Piringer, public information officer for MCFRS, announced Dec. 30 on Twitter.
Rodrigues is charged in the following cases:
- Two ATMs were set on fire at the Bank of America at 2601 University Blvd. W on Dec. 27; charged with second degree arson, first degree malicious burning and malicious destruction of property, with damage of more than $20,000
- Attempting to ignite a Mercedes-Benz either late Dec. 27 or early Dec. 28 in the 10000 block of Tenbrook Drive; charged with second degree attempted arson
- Attempting to ignite a dispensing fuel nozzle on Dec. 27 at the Shall station in the 9500 block of Georgia Avenue, chased away by attendants; charged with second degree attempted arson and second degree malicious burning, and
- Igniting a fire while pouring gasoline from pump at the Sunoco station at 8384 Colesville Rd on Dec. 28, damaging a car, two fuel pumps and the station, causing more than $100,000 in damages; charged with arson.
Rodrigues was briefly hospitalized, then arrested and sent to the county’s Central Processing Unit, where he is awaiting a bond hearing.
