Long Branch Community Center to Reopen May 16

The Long Branch Community Recreation Center and Senior Center at 8700 Piney Branch Rd. will reopen on Monday, May 16 with a mix of activities targeted to families and older adults, according to Judy Stiles, spokesperson for the county’s Recreation Department.

The rec center includes the senior center on the second floor, a gym, exercise rooms, an outdoor swimming pool, and fields for soccer, softball and other sports.

The rec center will hold a special reopening event on Saturday, May 21 with free activities that include dancing, music, food, inflatables, face painting and games.

“The reopening of the Long Branch Community Recreation and Senior Center makes it possible for the center to once again be a place for young people, families, and older adults to spend their leisure time,” said Robin Riley, the county’s recreation director.

The senior center provides a variety of free activities for those 55 and older, including daily exercise and wellness classes, entertainment and social pursuits.

It will celebrate its reopening from June 6–10, with free lessons on using its exercise equipment, how-to sessions on signing up for classes and its free lunch program, and specialty coffee with breakfast treats.

It will be open Monday–Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The rec center and senior center served as an emergency homeless shelter during the COVID-19 emergency. In March, the Nebel Street shelter in Bethesda opened to serve the homeless community.
