Coffield Recreation Center to Reopen June 13

The Gwendolyn E. Coffield Community Recreation Center at 2450 Lyttonsville Rd. in Silver Spring, will reopen to the public on Monday, June 13, officials announced.

Like the Long Branch Recreation Center, which reopened on May 16, the Coffield center had been used as a shelter for those in the community who needed safe lodging and basic services during the worst of the pandemic.

“The reopening makes it possible for the center to once again be a place for young people, families, and older adults to spend their leisure time,” Recreation Director Robin Riley said in a press release. “We have been working behind the scenes to have a facility that where we can offer high-quality recreation programming for everyone.”

The center includes a gym, fitness center, several multi-use rooms and a game room.

The department plans to begin offering programming for all ages, including such activities as sports clinics, cooking classes, fitness, floor hockey, martial arts and futsal, among others.

The center is within the Rosemary Hills-Lyttonsville Local Park. The park grounds include a softball field, a football/soccer field, two multi-use fields, four tennis courts, a playground and a picnic area.

The county will mark the reopening of the Coffield center on Saturday, June 18 with a Welcome Back Movie Night Festival, featuring Disney’s “Encanto,” from 7–10 p.m.

The center also will have music, food, a live Encanto character, Father’s Day drum circle, Juneteenth Freedom Day table and a TikTok dance booth. The movie will be shown outside beginning at dusk, around 8:45 p.m.

Normal operating hours for the center will be will be Monday -Thursday, 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
