The county’s library system is planning to bring back its “Grandreaders” program in person this summer at several branches, officials announced.
The program pairs a Grandreader volunteer with a child in kindergarten through third grade so they can practice reading out loud.
“This program is designed to improve students’ ability to read more fluently and with better comprehension and to keep their reading skills sharp during the summer,” Anita Vassallo, the system’s director, said in a press release.
The program is scheduled to begin next week and run until the end of July. Registration is not required and participants can bring their own book or choose one from the library.
Interested volunteers can contact the JCA Heyman Interages Center, part of the Jewish Council for Aging and a partner in the program, in order to participate.
The program is scheduled for the following libraries:
- Aspen Hill Library. 4407 Aspen Hill Rd., Thursdays, 3-4 p.m.
- Gaithersburg Library. 18330 Montgomery Village Ave., Wednesdays, 11 a.m.-noon.
- Wheaton Library. 11701 Georgia Ave, Mondays, 10:30-11:30 a.m. (except July 4).
- White Oak Library. 11701 New Hampshire Ave., Wednesdays, 3-4 p.m.
