Montgomery Parks is asking the public to participate in a survey about the amenities they’d like to see in the first phase of the planned South Silver Spring Park, officials announced.
The park will be located at 1110 East-West Highway, the former site of National Tire and Battery, and provide space for recreation, play and socializing. Demolition is planned for winter of this year and the park is expected to open in 2023.
The County Council in November approved $7.5 million to purchase the property across from Denizens Brewing and close to the Kennett Street Parking Garage. The space will provide a link between Kennett and East-West Highway.
The park also will connect to the Green Loop, a pedestrian- and bicyclist-friendly path planned to connect neighborhoods and destinations in downtown Silver Spring.
Parks staff are looking to include “a multipurpose court (basketball, soccer, volleyball, other) and exercise area; play such as games (ping pong, corn hole, bocce), playground, and nature play area; and social interaction such as a community plaza and terrace,” according to the park’s web page.
Staff is currently asking for input online, asking about the number of potential visits, how important various aspects of the plan would be, and demographic information.
