Longtime Takoma Park Volunteer Fire Chief Dies

Longtime Takoma Park Volunteer Fire Department chief James “Jimmy” Jarboe (retired) has died, the department announced Sunday.

Chief Jarboe served Takoma Park for over 60 years, from frontline firefighter to Chief, and in his later years as fire prevention and public education activist, the department said in the announcement.

“With the heaviest of hearts, and the deepest sorrow, we announce the passing of Chief James “Jimmy” Jarboe (ret.),” the announcement reads. “Chief Jarboe served Takoma Park for over 60 years, from frontline firefighter to Chief, and in his later years as one of the county’s greatest fire prevention and public education activists.

“Decades of institutional knowledge and history goes with him, and our department will miss him greatly.

“May he Rest In Peace, and may we all learn from his shining example of public service.”

Montgomery County Fire & Rescue also paid tribute on Twitter. “It is a very sad day for @mcfrs. Chief Jarboe touched generations with his passion, kindness, huge heart, the depth of his caring & masterful storytelling. It is with great heartache, profound sadness & grief that we bid farewell to our dear friend, colleague & mentor. #RIP #GOAT”

“We will miss him greatly,” Mayor Kate Stewart said. “Chief Jarboe was a TKPK legend and especially wonderful teaching the children in our community about fire safety. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
