29-year-old John Tomlinson was convicted of attempted second-degree murder this week and sentenced to 15 years in prison for a shooting that occurred last December in downtown Silver Spring.
Ten of the 15 years of Tomlinson’s sentence are mandatory.
Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said Wednesday that camera footage from a nearby parked Tesla vehicle, which was in “sentry mode“, helped identify Tomlinson as the suspect. Tomlinson had two guns with him when he was arrested by Montgomery County Police, according to a report from WUSA9.
“The investigation by detectives has determined that an individual, later identified as John Tomlinson, observed an impaired driver [of a Chrysler vehicle] colliding with his friend’s vehicle parked on Mayor Lane,” MCPD said last February. “Tomlinson observed his friend engaging in a physical altercation with the driver of the striking vehicle. Tomlinson ran down the street, retrieved a handgun from another vehicle, and returned to the scene. He then fired multiple rounds at the victim driver, striking his vehicle, street signs, and at least five businesses on Bonifant St. The victim was not injured.”
WUSA9 also reported that one of the other men who jumped on the Chrysler was Osman Sesay. Police fatally shot Sesay on Dec. 29 after allegedly pointing a gun at officers who had stopped his vehicle, suspecting it was involved in another shooting on Bonifant Street.
