A carjacking attempt at the Safeway in downtown Silver Spring on Monday evening was foiled by the car’s stick shift, according to Montgomery County Police.
Police spokesperson Shiera Goff said that at approximately 6:15 p.m. on Monday, an adult male left Safeway and placed his child and groceries in his vehicle. Upon approaching the victim, the suspect displayed a knife and demanded the keys to the vehicle. The victim complied and the suspect entered the vehicle. The suspect wasn’t able to drive the car because it was a manual transmission. He left the car and ran away.
Police canvassed the area, but were not able to find the suspect, Goff said.
The suspect is described as a Black male in his late teens, approximately 20 years old, standing between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches tall, and weighing 130 pounds. He was wearing a dark jacket, dark pants, and a black mask.
