Police: Traffic Stop Leads to Seizure of Stolen Semi-Automatic Rifle

Montgomery County Police say that 28-year-old Humberto Guerra Jr., of Silver Spring, and 41-year-old Freya Marla Casanova, of an unknown address, have been charged following a traffic stop in February.

The criminal charges against Guerra and Casanova were filed on March 1, according to an MCPD news release.

On Friday, Feb. 17, at approximately 11:25 p.m., officers observed a Toyota Camry traveling eastbound along Wisteria Dr. and Great Seneca Hwy. in Germantown. An officer initiated a traffic stop in the area of Middlebrook Rd. and Great Seneca Hwy. on a Toyota for maintaining a suspended registration. The officers made contact with the driver, Casanova, and Guerra, a passenger in the Toyota. According to MCPD, the Department of Motor Vehicle Administration issued a tag pick-up order for failure to comply with vehicle requirements.

Casanova was instructed that the car would be towed and Guerra was released from the scene, per departmental procedures, MCPD said.

As a result of a consensual search of Casanova’s belongings, officers found drug paraphernalia containing methamphetamine, providing probable cause for the search of the Toyota. The search of the Toyota revealed a semiautomatic rifle loaded with a 50-round drum magazine concealed in a gym bag.

Guerra, who is prohibited from possessing firearms, was found to have the rifle, which was reported stolen out of Alexandria, Va. Officers also determined that Casanova was in possession of the drug paraphernalia, MCPD said.
