San Pancho Burritos Is One of Washingtonian’s “27 Exciting New Restaurants Coming to the D.C. Area”

Washingtonian’s 27 Exciting New Restaurants Coming to the D.C. Area list includes San Pancho Burritos, which will open in Cielo Rojo’s original Takoma Park location.

The fast-casual brainchild of Cielo Rojo owners David Perez and Carolina McCandless made its debut at Mess Hall’s “New Kitchens on the Block” food festival last June. San Pancho Burritos will serve tortas and Mission-style burritos, which became popular during the 1960s in the Mission District of San Francisco:

San Francisco–style burritos on thin, Sonoran-style flour tortillas, are the thing at this all-day eatery, which replaces sister restaurant Cielo Rojo this fall (that Mexican cafe is moving to a bigger space nearby). Get them stuffed with scrambled eggs, pinto beans, and sautéed onions and poblanos in the morning, or fillings like chicken mole, salmon, or carnitas later in the day. There are frozen margaritas, sandwiches, and vegan and vegetarian burritos too, with add-ons including cashew cream, charred habanero peppers, and arbol salsa.

Cielo Rojo, which will appear on the new season of WETA’s television show Signature Dish later this month, will relocate a larger space in the former Healey Surgeons building at 7211 Carroll Ave., adjacent to the Takoma Park fire station and the TPSS Co-op. Both restaurants are expected to open this fall.
