Sticky Fingers Sweets & Eats will hold a soft opening for its new retail outlet and flagship commercial kitchen on Tuesday, Jan. 23rd in Takoma.
The bakery, owned by two-time “Cupcake Wars” winner Doron Petersan, has taken over the former space of Soupergirl at 314 Carroll Street NW, opposite the Takoma Metro Station. Soupergirl closed last year after 11 years in the neighborhood to focus on grocery store sales and deliveries.
Sticky Fingers’ new location features a retail counter for Sticky Fingers products, a grab-and-go section for local favorites like Soupergirl’s soups, and a larger commercial kitchen. Although the bakery is soft opening next week, it will gradually extend its hours and offerings in the following weeks, culminating in a grand opening celebration for the community in February.
According to a press release, Sticky Fingers has seen a significant increase in retail and wholesale sales, prompting the closure of its Columbia Heights branch and relocation to Takoma. In addition to the new Takoma site and Sticky Fingers Diner on H Street NE, DMV residents now have access to their favorite treats at 100 other retail outlets, including Foxtrot markets, Streets Markets, Whole Foods Markets, MOM’s Organic Markets, Yes! Organic Markets, Peregrine, and Odd Provisions.
Both the bakery and the full-service diner offer catering services.
The Takoma retail bakery will house a state-of-the-art production facility to meet the increasing demand for its mail-order and wholesale bakery items and mixes. It will offer a range of popular items including chocolate chip and Cowvin cookies, brownies, and seasonal and classic cupcakes, as well as custom cakes. The retail space will also introduce new savory additions such as plant-based ham and cheese croissants, spinach and feta danishes, sandwiches, artisanal vegan cheese, and house-made charcuterie, in addition to Soupergirl soups. The bakery will also serve freshly brewed coffee sourced from Alexandria-based Swing’s Coffee.
The new bakery caters to various dietary needs, offering options for vegans and those who adhere to kosher pareve guidelines. The facility is free from peanuts and shellfish and provides gluten-free choices.
“When I first moved to DC in 1995, I lived in and fell in love with Takoma Park,” Petersan said. “Ever since we opened our first shop in 2002, I’ve been looking for an opportunity to get back to the most welcoming community I’ve ever known. I am so excited to bring our sweets and eats to the Takoma and Takoma Park community, and have an opportunity to serve Shepherd Park, Silver Spring, Brightwood, and other neighborhoods in the area. I feel like we’re coming home!”
In January, the retail bakery will have varying hours and will be closed on Mondays. For February, Sticky Fingers Bakery will be open to the public from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Mondays to Fridays, and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
