Police in Takoma Park are investigating an armed carjacking incident that occurred on Sunday morning. According to police, a suspect assaulted a victim with a shovel after the individual had paid for gas at the Sunoco station on New Hampshire Avenue.
At approximately 6:48 a.m. on Sunday, Takoma Park Police responded to a report of an armed carjacking at the Sunoco gas station located in the 6900 block of New Hampshire Avenue. According to police spokesperson Cathy Plevy, the victim had just paid for gasoline inside the establishment and was walking back to his vehicle when a male suspect wearing a black ski mask and all-black clothing approached him. The suspect was wielding a shovel and demanded that the victim hand over his car keys.
The suspect used a shovel to assault the victim and steal their car keys. After obtaining the keys, the suspect fled in the victim’s car, heading north on New Hampshire Avenue. The victim was not seriously injured.
Plevy said the victim’s vehicle is a red Toyota Camry, MD Tag #ERM386, which has been entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) stolen vehicle database.
