Metro announced Wednesday that the Brookland-CUA station will be closed this weekend, and Red Line service at Fort Totten will be suspended on Saturday and Sunday.
Free shuttle buses will connect the closed stations between Takoma and Rhode Island Avenue; alternatively, Green Line service will remain available at Fort Totten. Passengers not traveling to or from the affected Red Line stations — Brookland-CUA or Fort Totten — should consider using the Green Line between Fort Totten and Gallery Place for connections to downtown DC and the Red Line.

Metro said in a press release that the weekend work would allow crews to prepare for the upcoming three-month closure on the Red Line this summer, including replacing the ties supporting the tracks in preparation for the summer shutdown and replacing the gears on the switches enabling trains to move from one track to another. Additionally, the work will involve clearing vegetation that could obstruct train service and installing fiber-optic cables to improve two-way communications for customers and Metro Transit Police.
Additional work is also planned on the southern end of the Green Line, with single-tracking between Naylor Road and Branch Avenue. New rail ties will be installed along the above-ground tracks, and new concrete grout pads will be installed to support tracks in tunnel sections, deck waterproofing, and removal of overgrown vegetation.
The Blue, Orange, Silver, and Yellow lines will operate with normal service, Metro said.
