Underground Pizza Company Faces Overwhelming Demand Prior to Silver Spring Closure

Baltimore-based Underground Pizza Company has faced overwhelming demand since announcing the closure of its location in downtown Silver Spring.

UPC announced Thursday evening that the downtown Silver Spring restaurant would close on Monday, June 3. The company noted that the lease was ending and that it “felt it was time to move on from our Georgia Avenue location.”

This morning, UPC posted this comment on the Source’s Facebook page:

Apparently enough people were sad to see us leave that our kitchen crashed and we also sold out of dough last night. We will be open the next 3 days to meet your needs. Sending one of our top people down from Baltimore to lead the kitchen so we don’t have issues.

Concert promoter and Steez Promo owner Evan Weinstein founded UPC in 2020 in a bid to adapt to the pandemic’s impact on local concert venues. He began selling Detroit-style pizzas at local pop-up events, quickly amassing a dedicated customer base by leveraging social media for marketing.

After the success of local pop-up events, UPC opened its first permanent location at Power Plant Live! in Baltimore in 2020. It later expanded to locations in Towson and downtown Silver Spring, which opened in 2022 at the former home of Olazzo at 8235 Georgia Ave.

Olazzo closed in 2021 after 15 years of operation, with UPC taking over the remainder of its lease.

UPC opened a ghost kitchen at Sports & Social at 1314 U St. NW in the District earlier this year, according to The MoCo Show. With UPC’s downtown Silver Spring location closing Monday, they are considering opening a new location in Rockville.
