J. Hollinger’s Waterman’s Chophouse continues to make a strong impression on local diners, remaining on Eater’s “38 Essential Restaurants Around D.C.” list following a recent summer update.
Eater’s curated list attempts to answer any question that begins with, “Can you recommend a restaurant?” and includes a diverse range of cuisines and price points throughout D.C. and its surrounding suburbs, from northern Virginia to suburban Maryland.
According to The MoCo Show, nearby restaurants Melina at Pike & Rose in North Bethesda and 2Fifty Texas BBQ in Riverdale Park are also featured.
When describing J. Hollinger’s, Eater D.C.’s editors wrote:
Restaurateur Jerry Hollinger (the Daily Dish and the Dish & Dram) delivered to downtown Silver Spring an Art Deco-styled American chophouse and raw bar celebrating local farmers, watermen, and purveyors. A black truffle vinaigrette-dressed beet salad or shrimp and pork belly toast adorned with homemade kimchi are good ways to start; follow those with Rohan duck confit, homemade spinach ricotta ravioli, halibut filet atop summer succotash, or anything from the luxe lineup of steaks. Augment dishes with underwater add-ons like butter-poached crab, lobster, jumbo shrimp, and fried oysters. The throwback space near the Fillmore also has a robust bar program starring New York Sours and fig-sage rye cocktails.
Following the Eater recognition, J. Hollinger’s has extended their Summer Restaurant Week lunch and dinner specials through Saturday, August 24.
The annual Restaurant Week promotion, sponsored by the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, offers an excellent opportunity to dine at popular restaurants, especially for lunch or brunch, where the best deals are available. During Restaurant Week, multi-course lunch and brunch menus are offered at over 300 area restaurants for $25 or $35 per person, and dinner menus are priced at $40, $55, or $65.
The $25 three-course lunch menu at J. Hollinger’s offers a variety of starters, including Watermelon Tomato Salad with arugula, basil, feta cheese, and citrus vinaigrette; Little Gem Caesar Salad with classic Caesar dressing, croutons, and grana Padano; and Vegetable Tempura featuring a chef’s selection of tempura-battered local vegetables and chili ponzu sauce, among others.
For the main course, guests can choose from Pan-Roasted Salmon Filet, Spicy Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich with house-made pickles, ranch dressing, sweet and sour dill cucumber salad with candy onions, radish, and basil, Heirloom Tomato Tart with local tomatoes, goat cheese, and basil, served with lentil cucumber basil salad, or Chophouse Burger with a short rib/brisket blend, bacon, cheddar, LTO, house-made pickles, chophouse sauce on a brioche bun, served with French fries.
For dessert, a choice of Grilled Peaches with house-made vanilla bean ice cream, Lemon Posset, house-made Ice Cream or Sorbet, or Chocolate Mousse with Grand Marnier whipped cream and raspberry garnish will be available.
The $40 three-course dinner menu features starters such as Gazpacho with local tomatoes, cucumber, bell peppers, and candy onions; Watermelon Tomato Salad with arugula, feta cheese, and citrus vinaigrette; Vegetable Tempura with a chef’s selection of tempura-battered local vegetables with chili ponzu sauce; Moroccan Spiced Lamb Meatballs with tomato sauce and tzatziki sauce; and Heirloom Tomato Tart with local tomatoes, goat cheese, and basil.
For the main course, diners can choose from Pan-Roasted Salmon Filet with summer ratatouille of zucchini, squash, eggplant, peppers, and tomatoes, drizzled with basil pesto and topped with olive-caper tapenade, Grilled Bone-In Pork Chop with summer succotash of corn, peppers, onions, and cherry tomatoes, served with fried potato coins and chimichurri sauce; Eggplant Parmesan Stack with local tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, house-made pappardelle pasta, and roasted eggplant-tomato sauce; Grilled Angus Steak Frites with garlic-parsley butter, french fries, and mixed greens; or Statler Chicken Breast Saltimbocca stuffed with prosciutto and gruyere cheese, served with green beans, house-made pappardelle pasta, morel mushrooms, and basil in a white wine butter sauce.
The meal concludes with a choice of Peach Crumble topped with house-made vanilla bean ice cream, Tiramisu, House-made Ice Cream or Sorbet, or Chocolate Mousse with Grand Marnier whipped cream and raspberry garnish.
“Dishes will be served in full-size portions to ensure that you enjoy the complete dining experience,” a representative for J. Hollinger’s said via email earlier this month. “Menu upgrades will be available for those seeking alternative options beyond our already expansive prix-fixe menu offering.”
