Montgomery County Parking Garages Receive Clean Sweep this Fall

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation will begin its biannual interior washdown on Monday to degrease and clean 21 county-owned parking garages in Silver Spring, Wheaton, and Bethesda.

The cleanings, which will occur at night and on weekends, will start in Bethesda on Monday, September 9, and conclude in the Silver Spring garages on Sunday, November 3.

Some garages, including entrance and exit areas and ramps, will be partially closed during the cleanings.

MCDOT said that contractors will make every effort to complete their work around garage traffic and parked vehicles, and they will provide appropriate signage to notify customers of expected access impacts.

According to MCDOT, spring and fall washdowns are performed yearly to ensure the cleanliness of garages and prevent deterioration from prolonged exposure to salt, sand, oils, gas, dirt, pollen, and leaves.

“Regular cleanings also help to keep grease, oil, and debris out of local waterways,” MCDOT said in a press release. “Some of the garages have permanent run off filtration systems and others have diverter valves that, when activated during the washdown, change the direction of the water flow from storm to sanitary.”

More information and a full garage cleaning schedule are available on the MCDOT website.
