The Montgomery County Department of Transportation has announced a temporary traffic shift in downtown Silver Spring to accommodate Purple Line construction.
The reconfiguration of traffic lanes on Georgia Avenue between Silver Spring and Wayne Avenues started this week and will continue until January of next year. Crews have reduced travel to two lanes in each direction and shifted to the west around the work zone at Bonifant Street to facilitate utility and track installation along Georgia Avenue.

Work typically occurs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. but may extend to nights and weekends as needed. MCDOT said that pedestrian detours will be set up around the work zone, ensuring access to businesses and maintaining some parking on Georgia Avenue.
Purple Line officials shared an update video this week showcasing significant construction progress on the 16-mile, 21-station light rail project. The project is more than 65 percent complete and scheduled to begin service in winter 2027.
