CREATE Arts Center is leaving its current home on Thayer Avenue and moving a few blocks away to the Atrium Building at 914 Silver Spring Ave.
The center, a nonprofit visual arts organization that’s been in Silver Spring since 2003, will relocate into the space formerly occupied by Roadhouse Oldies.
In addition, Jeremy Flick, CREATE’s executive director, said the group was knocking down a wall to take over The Highwood Theatre’s black box space, giving the group a total of 2,250 square feet.
“We are all very excited about this opportunity. This new facility will play a large part in helping sustain CREATE and strengthen our capacity to expand our existing footprint within the community,” said Flick in a press release. “The new street-level office and studio space will provide increased capacity for our existing programs [and] opportunities for new collaborations with community partners.”
The center offers classes, camps, workshops and art therapy and also will host meetings, exhibitions and community events.
The renovations are already underway, and CREATE will host a Hard Hat Open House on Saturday, March 3 from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. for the community members to get a look at the new space.
The organization will maintain programs at the current location during the move. A Spring Break Art Camp that begins March 26 will be the first official program in the new space.
The group will work in partnership with the theater organization as well.
Highwood’s Executive Director Kevin Kearney added in the release, “We believe strongly that a partnership with CREATE can strengthen both organizations and create a true artistic hub in downtown Silver Spring.”
