The county has issued a cold emergency alert until 1 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 31.
Wind chill temperatures during this time are expected to dip to below zero, which can cause frostbite within 30 minutes, or lead to hypothermia, or both.
The county recommends that residents stay indoors as much as possible. Anyone who must work or be outdoors for any length of time should dress in layers and take frequent breaks in a warm area, as well as stay hydrated.
Anyone who’s concerned about the safety of a homeless person should call the police non-emergency number (301.279.8000) to report a person in possible danger.
The county also has declared that animal anti-cruelty regulations are in effect during this alert. Unattended tethering of dogs is not permitted; the penalty for a violation is a $500 fine.
Anyone who sees an animal left outside that appears to be in danger should immediately call the Animal Services Division at 301.279.8000.
