An exhibition of contemporary sculptures from four county artists will open the 2019 season at the Betty Mae Kramer Gallery and Music Room with a public reception Thursday, Feb. 7.
The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County’s public art manager Amina K. Cooper curated “The Shape of Things to Come,” which will be on display until April 5.
“We are excited to kick off 2019 with inventive new work by local artists in Montgomery County,” said Suzan Jenkins, AHCMC CEO in a press release. “It will be interesting to see how each sculptor’s unique perspective of current affairs sparks constructive dialogue among members of our diverse community.”
The featured artists are:
- Shelley Picot, whose sculptures and drawings blend narrative, autobiography, magical realism, and comics. She currently works and lives in North Bethesda
- Gretchen Schermerhorn, the artistic director at Pyramid Atlantic, an art center dedicated to the contemporary creation of hand printmaking, papermaking and the art of the book in Hyattsville
- Amare Selfu, who currently teaches undergraduate courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art and Montgomery College, and
- Vidya Vijayasekharan, who has been teaching art history at Montgomery College since 1993.
The opening reception will be held in the gallery at the Silver Spring Civic Building on Thursday, Feb. 7 from 6-8 p.m. It is free, though tickets can be reserved online.
