Source Neighborhoods: Sligo Park Hills

Tucked between Sligo Creek and Piney Branch, bounded on the southern end by Mississippi Avenue in the city of Takoma Park, is the delightful neighborhood of Sligo Park Hills.

With its winding streets graced by many, many trees, there’s a calm, forest feel. In spring, especially when there’s a canopy of flowering crabapples, you’ll feel like you’re taking a walk in the country. Abundant azaleas, glorious gardens and generous green spaces dot the neighborhood.

Established in the late twenties with many houses built in the 30’s and 40s and continuing in to the 21st Century, Sligo Park HIlls offers a rich treasure of architectural diversity, from elegant Tudors and charming Capes to classic Colonials and stylish Contemporary homes, not to mention all the handsome additions and renovations to the original homes you can observe.

While a perennially popular neighborhood, Sligo Park Hills tends to keep a low profile in close-in Silver Spring, since there is really no reason to drive in unless you live there. The cars sail by on Piney Branch.

There is never much turnover in the housing market. For example, in 2017 only approximately eight houses were sold ranging from $368,000 to $830,000. The $368,000 house was subsequently totally rehabbed and re-sold for $600,000.

And Sligo Park Hills is a neighborhood. There’s a neighborhood listserv, an occasionally published neighborhood directory and several neighborhood traditions that take place throughout the year:  a spring garden cleanup, a summer party, the Halloween parade and holiday tree lighting. This is a community where friendly neighbors know each other.
