Montgomery County police have identified the mother of an abandoned newborn baby found Friday near Sligo Creek north of Dennis Avenue, according to a department press release.

The infant female was found naked in the woods after a man walking in the 10000 block of Tenbrook Drive heard a baby crying, found the child and called 911.

Montgomery County Child Welfare Services now has custody of the child, which was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

The mother is also receiving care at a hospital, the department said.

Under Maryland’s Safe Haven law, a parent, or adult designated by the parent, may anonymously give up custody of a baby within 10 days of its birth. The baby can be taken to certain hospitals or law enforcement stations and no questions will be asked.

If the child is unharmed, the person who invokes the Safe Haven law is immune from civil liability or criminal charges.

This case remains under investigation.
