Silver Spring-based Patisserie Manuel will close its Montgomery Mall location on Sunday, March 28, according to a post on their Instagram page. Pastry Chef Claudia Olea opened her kitchen at 8810 Brookville Rd. in 2013 after graduating from L’Academie de Cuisine. That location will remain open for online ordering, pickup and delivery.
The county’s Department of Health and Human Services is accepting applications from nonprofit organizations for the FY22 Community Services Grants Program, officials announced. The one-time grants of up to $10,000 are available “to support health and human service projects that promote a safe, healthy, and self-sufficient community.”
The County Council, sitting as the Board of Health, plans to meet this afternoon (March 19) to hold a public hearing and vote on an amended regulation that would loosen restrictions on organized youth sports. If the regulation is passed, all organized sports, whether played indoors or out, would need to have a COVID protocol plan approved by the county’s health officer (or his designee).
The rooftop of Kaldi’s Social House is being remodeled and will be completely enclosed, according to owner Tsega Hailemariam. The roof has been an issue with Thayer & Spring apartment residents unhappy about the noise from Kaldi’s, as well as businesses along Georgia Avenue, Hailemariam said.
The Takoma Park Police Department is investigating two cases of commercial destruction of property that occurred early this morning (March 26), according to a community advisory. The first case involved Republic at 6939 Laurel Ave. The second was at Takoma Bev Co., 6917 Laurel Ave.
Detectives from the Major Crimes Division are investigating a shooting that occurred in Silver Spring on March 3 that has now been ruled a homicide following the victim’s death. The victim has been identified as Derek James McBrayer, age 40, of Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda. The shooting occurred in the 1000 block of Quebec Terrace, and officers responded to a report of the incident at about 5:39 p.m.
A local nonprofit is marking a one-year anniversary this month that they never expected to see. Community Connections was started in March 2020 by Silver Spring Cares, founded by Liz Brent, owner of Go Brent, a local real estate agency. The program’s purpose was to raise funds to help both food-insecure residents and local restaurants hit by the pandemic.
The County Council, acting as the Board of Health, yesterday unanimously approved a regulation loosening many of the COVID–19 restrictions that were in place. During the discussion, council members made it clear they felt pressured to do so after Gov. Larry Hogan surprised officials with a March 9 announcement that lifted many statewide COVID-19 restrictions as of 5 p.m. Friday, March 12.
