Archival Research 101 (Virtual)

    Archival Research 101 guides students down pathways for using third-party media in films. This course highlights how to avoid copyright and licensing pitfalls. Students will learn from pre-production to final delivery the basics of how to research, order, and clear archival photographs, films, and videos. We will move beyond Google and seek material at archives like the National Archives, Library of Congress, public libraries, museums, and universities. The course will cover media formats, copyright, licensing, budgeting, public domain materials, distributor requirements, and media management. Students will take away a list of go-to sources for historic film research and contemporary media licensing.

    About the Teaching Artist: Sarah Katz

    Sarah Katz is a 20+ year veteran in the non-fiction media industry. She has credits on over two hundred hours of non-fiction content for more than twelve production companies and six networks including Netflix, HBO, A+E, Amazon, and National Geographic. She recently wrapped as the Senior Archival Producer on a yet-to-be released HBO documentary with McGee Media. Prior to that she collaborated with Even/Odd Studio and Anonymous Content on WE ARE AYENDA which won the Cannes Lion Grand Prix. The film follows the Afghan youth women’s football team as they escape the Taliban. Between 2022 and 2023 Sarah served as the series-wide Archival Producer on the Emmy nominated Netflix series UNKNOWN at Story Syndicate. Since 2016 Sarah has produced news stories about American policy for foreign journalists with the Foreign Press Center, Bureau of Global Affairs, Department of State.

    Sarah is a seasoned teaching artist. She has been conducting Archival Research 101 workshops at Docs In Progress for many years.

    Refund Policy

    If your circumstances change and you must withdraw from a class after registering, please be aware of our refund policy:

    Withdrawal 30 or more calendar days before the first day of a program: 75% refund

    Withdrawal 11-29 calendar days before the first day of a program: 50% refund

    Withdrawal 10 or fewer calendar days before a program: No refund
