Youth Road Riding Basics
May 18 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Road Riding Basics teaches your child the skills they need to ride safely and confidently on streets and in heavily trafficked areas.
This class is for children ages 10-17 who already know how to ride a bike and want to grow as a bicyclist.
Our League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) spend the first half covering important bike handling skills and hazard avoidance maneuvers necessary while riding in traffic. Participants learn skills such as the avoidance weave, quick stop, scanning and signalling, and discuss considerations for being a responsible road user.
The class ends with an on-street group ride, where participants put their newly acquired skills to the test. Instructors will stop at different points to discuss how to approach different on-road scenarios and bike infrastructure. Have any questions? Email us at education@waba.org.
Check out WABA’s Code of Conduct for event participants.
This class is for your child if:
- Your child can ride a bike and has experience riding on trails
- Your child knows how to ride a bike and would like to learn how to ride safely in traffic
- Your child has experience riding in traffic but would like to learn more about traffic law and how to confidently navigate tricky traffic situations
Equipment:
- Participants are required to bring their own bicycle and helmet for this class.
- Bikes must be in good working order.
- Please watch this video and check over the bike that will be used for class to make sure it is in proper working order before class.
- Also, check out this video on how to fit a child’s bike to make sure it is the right size before coming to class.
- Your child should be able to sit on the saddle with their feet on the ground. If their bike is too big or too small for them, it will be a challenge to teach them to use it.
