County police are investigating a shooting that took place early Monday morning and damaged businesses along Georgia Avenue, according to a department press release.
The Emergency Communications Center reported receiving multiple calls about shots fired at approximately 3 a.m. in the 8200 block of Georgia. Responding officers were able to talk with “multiple” witnesses, police said, and the incident did not appear to be random.
“The preliminary investigation has determined that two groups of individuals were involved in a verbal altercation on the sidewalk in front of 8229 Georgia Avenue [where the Society Restaurant and Lounge is located],” according to the release. “One of the individuals involved in the altercation entered the driver’s side of a black sedan that was parallel parked on Georgia Avenue and drove away.”
As the car headed north on Georgia, several shots were fired from the car.
No injuries were reported, police said. WUSA-TV reported that The Big Greek Café and Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant were damaged, apparently by bullets.
