Labor Day Schedule Changes, Closures Announced

Montgomery Parks announced that portions of Sligo Creek Parkway would remain closed to vehicles and open for pedestrians, bicyclists and other exercise on Labor Day, Sept. 7.

On Labor Day weekend, the parkway will be available Friday at 9 a.m. through Tuesday, September 8, at 7 a.m. from Old Carroll Avenue to Piney Branch Road (1.1 miles) and Forest Glen Road to University Boulevard West (1.5 miles).

After Labor Day, the road will be open to pedestrians and cyclists Friday mornings at 9 a.m. through Sunday at 6 p.m. until further notice, according to a press release.

“People are really taking advantage of the open parkways as a great way to exercise and enjoy nature while still being able to stay safe during the COVID-19 crisis.  In response, we plan to continue this initiative until further notice,” Mike Riley, director of Montgomery Parks, said in the announcement.

In addition, the county announced Labor Day closures, including all county offices and libraries, as well as state offices and courts; most already have been closed for pandemic.

All recreation centers, senior centers and administrative offices will be closed, though outdoor swim centers will be open.

Alcohol Beverage Services stores will be open from noon–5 p.m. on Labor Day.

Ride On/Ride On extra will operate on a Sunday schedule, while Ride On Flex remains out of service due to health crisis. Metrorail and Metrobus information is available at www.wmata.com, while MARC train and commuter bus information can be found at at maryland.gov.

County-provided trash and recycling collection will not be conducted on Monday, Sept. 7. After the holiday, those collections will slide to one day later than normal. The Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station will be closed.

Finally, parking at public garages, lots and curbside meters will be free on the holiday.
