County Executive Marc Elrich plans to release the county’s Climate Action Plan today at 1 p.m. in Wheaton at the Marian Fryer Town Plaza across from the new Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission headquarters at 2425 Reedie Dr.
The plan’s goals include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2027 and by 100 percent by 2035 compared to 2005 levels and is being billed as “is one of the most ambitious climate plans in the nation for a local government,” according to a press release.
“The urgency of climate change inspires Montgomery County to serve as a model for other jurisdictions,” said Elrich. “Combatting climate change provides an opportunity to build a healthy, equitable and resilient community. There is no magic wand to accomplish this monumental task. We must take big, bold steps—and many of them.”
The plan outlines 86 climate actions based on earlier work of more than 200 volunteer members of the Climate Technical Workgroups, county employees and technical consultants. A draft of the plan was released in December for public comment.
Elrich also plans to announce the Fiscal Year 2022 Climate Work Plan. This plan describes actions on 75 of 86 recommendations on which the county intends to make progress during FY22.
