Maryland’s Tax-Free Shopping Week Begins Today

“Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week” begins today, Aug. 14, and runs through Aug. 20, various state and county officials announced.

During the week, any single qualifying article of clothing or footwear costing less than $100 will be exempt from Maryland’s 6% sales tax, no matter how many items are bought.

In addition, any backpack purchase will qualify for the first $40 being tax-free.

The full list of qualifying items, which is extensive, is posted on the Maryland comptroller’s website.

“Whether you’re looking to freshen up your wardrobe for the cooler months ahead or need to get your kids the latest styles for the new school year, this end-of-summer tradition is a great time to shop, save and support Maryland businesses,” Comptroller Peter Franchot said in a press release.

Items that cost more than $100 will be taxed, as will things such as accessories and most sports equipment.

The comptroller’s office also has posted an FAQ about the week for shoppers and retailers alike.
