Interfaith Works Welcomes New Director of Essential Needs

Interfaith Works has named Supriya Mordecai, M.S., as the new Director of Essential Needs, encompassing oversight of the Interfaith Works Clothing Center, Food Pantry, and Connections Programs.

The Essential Needs Center offers individuals and families with limited income access to clothing, home goods, food, and other community resources. Additionally, the Essential Needs Center provides emergency rental and utility assistance at no cost to those in need.

Ms. Mordecai started working at Interfaith Works in 2021 and served as a Case Manager for almost two years, assisting clients at the Interfaith Works Drop-In Center and Shelter at Progress Place in downtown Silver Spring, formerly known as the Empowerment Center. She also contributed to Case Management at other IW locations before taking on the role of Program Director at Progress Place in January 2023.

“As the incoming Director of the Essential Needs Center, I am excited to continue to serve clients in a different capacity while also developing community partnerships to increase donations, as well as volunteers,” Ms. Mordecai said in a press release. “This is a great program and resource to so many people in Montgomery County. I hope to continue to learn how to best provide client-centered services.”

“Supriya is an excellent addition to our Senior Leadership Team,” Interfaith Works CEO Courtney Hall said. “Her empathy, efficiency, and creativity will ensure that the IW Essential Needs Center continues to meet the most pressing needs in our community.”

Ms. Mordecai earned a Master of Science in Psychology from Hampton University and has a strong interest in understanding human behavior. She values learning about history and social issues and enjoys trying out different cuisines and exploring new cities in her free time.

According to Interfaith Works, the Rockville-based nonprofit supports over 35,000 residents annually through a range of programs. These include emergency shelter, supportive housing, essential needs assistance such as emergency aid, clothing, and food, as well as pre-employment training and skills building.

Interfaith Works marked its 50th anniversary in 2022.
