Sweat for a Cause: Girls on the Run Summer Fitness Series Supports Local Youth Development

Girls on the Run of Montgomery County has launched a series of fitness events with Orangetheory Fitness, Urban Boxing, and another studio to be announced soon.

Workouts led by professional instructors will take place on the second Saturday of June, July, and August and are suitable for individuals aged 18 and above, regardless of their fitness level. Proceeds from each event will support the Rockville-based nonprofit, which supports over 4,000 girls and provides financial assistance to more than 1,000 annually in Montgomery County.

Additionally, 200 pairs of shoes are provided to underserved girls each year.

Girls on the Run programs “are designed to inspire girls in grades 3 through 8, of all abilities, to discover, build, and grow their self-confidence,” the organization said in a press release. “Together, they experience a sense of belonging and connection as a team. At the end of the season, the team completes a Community Impact Project and a 5K together, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and sets a confident mindset into motion.”

“I participated in Girls on the Run 13 years ago, and the lessons are still with me today,” said Paige Chestler, a former Girls on the Run participant at Westbrook Elementary. “The program helped me gain self-confidence and a sense of community which was so important at that time in my life.”

“The GOTR Summer Sweat Series is a fantastic way to experience local fitness studios in Montgomery County while supporting a meaningful cause,” said Belle Chiu, organizer of the series and member of the Girls on the Run of Montgomery County Advisory Committee. “We are deeply grateful to the studios partnering with us to raise awareness and funds for the programs we offer at Girls on the Run. Each class this summer will support GOTR, unite the community, and provide a fun workout experience. I hope you’ll join us this summer!”

The first two Summer Sweat series events will occur at Orangetheory Fitness and Urban Boxing in Bethesda. Visit Girls on the Run of Montgomery County on Facebook and Instagram for more information and to register for the events.
