Montgomery County Police say that thefts of Hyundai vehicles have decreased by 90 percent since October of 2023.
The police department established the Auto Crime Enforcement Section (ACES) early last year to combat auto thefts countywide.
“Through extensive investigations, release of information, and the department’s partnership with the Hyundai corporation, three-day events were held in May and August of this year to offer anti-theft security software installations to Hyundai owners, free of charge,” police spokesperson Mary DiGilio said in a press release. “With these events, ACES was able to successfully reduce the number of thefts in Montgomery County.”
The number of stolen Hyundai vehicles has been steadily decreasing. In October 2023, 103 Hyundai vehicles were reported stolen. In December 2023, the number decreased to 42, indicating a 60 percent drop between October and December.
In September 2024, 35 Hyundai vehicles were reported stolen, marking a 56 percent decrease from January to September 2024.
Data includes reported attempted and successful auto thefts and does not include Takoma Park Police.
