Residents have the opportunity to choose one of three designs proposed for a large-scale mural on the exterior wall of 8402 Georgia Ave. at the corner of Bonifant Street, a building that houses Lina’s Diner and Bar.
The mural is a public-private collaboration between the Silver Spring Urban District, the Silver Spring Arts and Entertainment District, and the Washington Property Company, which is funding the cost of the artwork.
It will face 8250 Solaire Georgia Ave., an apartment building currently being built by WPC, and the route of the Purple Line.
A public call was issued for artists to submit concept proposals “that visually activated the length of the wall and conveyed a sense of movement and whimsy,” according to a press release.
A panel chose the three finalists from among the entries received. Each artist will receive a stipend for their design, and the winning artist will be awarded the contract.
“We had some beautiful designs submitted, but the jury could only choose three that we felt best represented the theme,” said Reemberto Rodriguez, director of the Silver Spring Regional Services Center. “Hopefully, we will get to work with some of the artists on future public art projects in Silver Spring.”
Votes can be submitted through October 15. There is a limit of one vote per email address; so far, more than 800 votes have been cast.
Once completed, the mural will join more than 50 other pieces of public art within the Arts & Entertainment District.
