WSSC water main project map
WSSC has finished marking underground utilities and will begin excavating Colesville Road to replace water mains on Monday, Sept. 18, weather permitting.
The project will start near the intersection with Georgia Avenue and move north toward the Beltway as work progresses, the utility said in a press release.
Drivers can expect to find one- and two-lane closures during the water main work, which is expected to be finished in the spring of 2019, depending on the weather. Sidewalk, roadways and landscaping restoration will follow the completion of the water main work.
Most of the work will be done during weekday off-peak hours between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. However, the company cautioned that weekend work may occur from 9 a.m.-9 p.m., and occasional evening work also may take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.
WSSC has said it will contact affected residents and businesses prior to any evening or weekend work.
The company also noted that no parking would be allowed along Colesville where crews are working.
WSSC plans to replace and relocate about 1.88 miles (1.53 miles of 16/20-inch transmission mains and 0.25 miles of distribution water mains) of water mains on Colesville Road and the connections to its intersecting streets.
The new water mains will be zinc-coated, ductile iron pipe wrapped in a protective coating, giving the pipes a life expectancy of at least 100 years, the company said.
