County residents may prepay their 2018 property taxes under emergency legislation passed Tuesday by the County Council.
The council acted in reaction to legislation signed last week that revamped the U.S. tax code. Among other provisions, the law limits the state and local income tax, sales tax and property tax deductions for those who itemize to $10,000 beginning in 2018.
The advance payment of 2018 property tax before the end of 2017 may be deductible for some taxpayers on their 2017 federal income tax return. The advance payment must be made in person or by mail and must be postmarked by Dec. 31.
State law requires that residents who intend to prepay their property tax must pay the full amount of their 2017 county property tax. If residents owe property tax for the current or prior years, the payment will be applied to any past due amount before it is applied to any advance payment, according to press release.
If mailing in a payment, resident must include a signed “notice of intent” form, which is available online. Payments should be sent to Department of Finance, Division of Treasury, ATTN: 2018 Prepayment of Taxes, 255 Rockville Pike, Suite L-15, Rockville, MD 20850.
