Councilmember Hans Riemer (D-At Large) of Takoma Park has been elected to a one-year term as vice president of the Montgomery County Council.
Vice President Riemer, the council’s lead member for digital government, is beginning his seventh year on the council as an at-large member, according to a county press release.
“He has been a strong advocate for funding public education and public transportation, early childhood programs, libraries, recreation, human services, housing and economic development. He chaired the council’s Ad-hoc Committee on Liquor Control that sought to reform the county’s program of alcohol distribution,” the release said.
“I also know, more importantly, that he works very hard to represent the interests of the entire county, not any one part of the county,” said Councilmember George Leventhal (D-At Large), who nominated Riemer for the vice presidency.
Councilmember Roger Berliner (D-District 1) of Bethesda was elected council president, also for one year. He had been serving as the council’s vice president.
“Our county is a national leader on many, many issues, a fact we are justifiably proud of. But what our residents really expect of us is to deliver on the fundamentals—get the basics right,” he said in the release.
Berliner’s other priorities include serving as a model inclusive community, expanding the ladder of opportunity and creating vibrant communities.
“I am looking forward to serving the council as a whole in my new role a vice president,” Riemer said in a Twitter message to the Source of the Spring. “We are definitely in for an exciting few years at the County Council. And of course I will keep my focus on supporting education, transportation and economic development.
“But one thing I know is true about the council, you never know what to expect,” he concluded.
