Chamber Creates Award for Exemplary Selfless Service

The Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce has created a new award to recognize an individual who provides an exemplary example of selfless service. The Andrew Lee Service Beyond Self Award is named for the late Andrew Lee, son of Sarah and Bruce Lee, a former chamber chair, board member, and CEO of Lee Development Group in Silver Spring.

Golf Course Now Featuring Local Bands on Friday Nights

Sligo Creek Golf Course has begun featuring local bands playing on the patio in front of Sligo Pit Bar-B-Que on Fridays from 6-8 p.m. Tonight, Trainwreck will play. Later this summer, Marcus Johnson and the Nighthawks will play larger benefit shows on the lawn.

Real Estate Brokerage Moves to Street Facing Space

The Go Brent real estate brokerage has moved into the space at 914 Silver Spring Ave. formerly occupied by Innovative Business Interiors. The move is part of a trend that is seeing former street-facing retail space occupied by service businesses in downtown and elsewhere.

The Transit Challenge: What I Learned

A number of local officials accepted a challenge from the Action Committee for Transit to spend the week of June 10-17 using only public transit, or active modes of transportation such as biking, walking or scooters, to travel around the county. Urban Butcher is back this week to its regular operating hours with a new look and a new menu. The restaurant has added new starter dishes and seafood entrées while retaining many of the familiar beef offerings. The restaurant opens at 5 p.m. daily except Monday, with happy hour for 5-7:30 p.m.

Jazz Festival Will Be Held This Summer After All

County Executive to Eliminate Jazz Festival, Consider Smaller Events

The Silver Spring Jazz Festival will go on this summer after all, thanks largely to community feedback in reaction to a Source story about its apparent demise in favor of a series of smaller events. The festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 24 and the list of performers will be released in a few weeks. In the meantime, the Thursday Summer Concert Series is back next week.
