The chef/owner of El Sapo Cuban Social Club has been sued for nearly $150,000 in a contract case, according to documents filed in the Montgomery County Circuit Court. As first reported Friday by Washington City Paper, JSV LLC, a Virginia-based design/build contractor, sued Raynold Mendizábal for $147,408 last March.

DOT to Hold Community Meeting on Fenton Village Safety Projects

The county’s Department of Transportation will hold a community meeting Tuesday, Jan. 21 to review the status of three projects concerning bicycle and pedestrian uses in Fenton Village. One project is the restart of a feasibility study for a separated bikeway along Fenton Street, as identified in the county’s Bicycle Master Plan adopted by the Park and Planning Commission in December 2018.

MoComCon returns for the fourth year at the Silver Spring Library on Saturday. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday is Monday, with a day of service event at the civic building and other opportunities to serve around the area. That evening, there’s a bluegrass jam at the Takoma Park VFW. The county’s transportation department is holding a meeting Tuesday night to discuss plans to improve the Fenton Village experience for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Police Investigating Georgia Avenue Shooting

County police are investigating a shooting that took place early Monday morning and damaged businesses along Georgia Avenue. The Emergency Communications Center reported receiving multiple calls about shots fired at approximately 3 a.m. in the 8200 block of Georgia.

Community Tips Led to Suspect’s Arrest, Police Say

County police credit community members for tips that resulted in the arrest of a 17-year-old male suspect. Chase Gomez of Silver Spring has been charged as an adult for handgun-related offenses and for the possession and distribution of marijuana, according to a department release.

County Police Release Surveillance Video in Sunday Shooting

County police have released surveillance video of possible suspects as they continue to investigate a shooting on Ellsworth Drive on Jan. 5. Detectives from the 3rd District Investigative Section are asking for the public’s help to identify those believed to have been involved in the incident, which police say does not appear to be random.

Carroll Café features a performance by Victoria Fox Friday night, while on Saturday, six local bands will play at the American Legion hall. Earlier that day, there will be a Chinese Near Year celebration at the Silver Spring Library, and Fenwick Beer & Wine celebrates its 10th anniversary all day. For the civic minded, there will be an MCPS boundary study meeting Saturday at Blair High School, the Silver Spring Civic Advisory Board meets Monday and the Silver Spring Urban District Advisory Committee meets next Thursday.

Fenwick Beer & Wine to Mark 10th Anniversary Saturday

Fenwick Beer & Wine will celebrate its 10th anniversary all day Saturday, Jan. 11, according to owner Suman Shresthra. Shresthra and his wife Cathy opened the shop, which specializes in craft beer and boutique wines, with a soft opening at the end of 2009, then officially opened in January 2010.
