Some of the top events this week include opening night of the first Long Branch Festival on Friday night. The Nighthawks will perform at Sligo Creek Golf Course on Saturday in a benefit performance, while the second annual Montgomery Hills Street Fest is underway as well. That same day is the Takoma Foundation’s annual beer festival. The Friends of Sligo Creek will hold a Sweep the Creek clean up this weekend. On Sunday, enjoy the competition and grab a slice of the Takoma Farmers Market pie baking contest.

Installation of New Public Art Completed

The installation of the newest piece of public art has been completed by Grosvenor Americas on the Central Apartments property near the corner of Wayne Avenue and Fenton Street. Titled “Crossroads,” the 32-foot stainless steel sculpture is by Rodney Carroll, a nationally recognized artist based in Baltimore.

Ellsworth Drive to Close, Become a Linear Urban Park

The operators of Downtown Silver Spring will permanently close Ellsworth Drive to vehicular traffic, and lay down nontoxic artificial turf to create what’s described as a “linear urban park.” Bryant Foulger, chairman of Fougler-Pratt, one of the complex’s owners, presented plans for a $10 million renovation of the area to a generally receptive audience of about 60 people last night.

Downtown Silver Spring to Get $10 Million Renovation, New Tenants

Representatives of the owners of the Downtown Silver Spring development will hold a community meeting Monday Sept. 16 to present plans for the complex’s renovation. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Silver Spring Civic Building.
A $10 million renovation of the area was announced in May by The Peterson Companies (which manages the development) and Foulger-Pratt that, together with Argo Investment Co., owns the complex.

The inaugural induction ceremony for the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame on Friday night highlights this week’s events. On Saturday, the usual second Saturday of live music at the American Legion will be expanded into an end-of-summer bash featuring eight local bands and extended hours. The same night, also at the legion’s hall, the DC Blues Society will hold its annual showdown. There will be a climate town hall and a street art festival on Saturday, Future Fest is set for Sunday, and a community meeting will be held Monday to present plans for the renovation of Downtown Silver Spring.

PLNT Burger Grand Opening Set for Tomorrow

PLNT Burger, a vegan fast-casual restaurant led by local celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn, will hold the grand opening of its first location tomorrow, company officials announced. The outlet is inside the Whole Foods at 833 Wayne Ave. in downtown Silver Spring and features Beyond Burgers, a product of Beyond Meat that is a plant-based burger made without GMOs, soy, or gluten.
