Two Silver Spring small businesses will team up to offer a weeklong summer camp designed to teach girls technology skills and self-empowerment.
“Girl-Powered: Changemakers” will be led by Lindsey Turnbull, owner of MissHeard Media, and held at Catylator Makerspace on Georgia Avenue, owned by Stephen Morris.
“We are doing kind of a very holistic summer camp,” Turnbull said. “[Morris] teaches the girls some of the technology and I teach the leadership bit and the girl-empowerment bit.
“We also had the idea to bring in a ton of people from the community so that the girls could meet women business owners and women politicians and women leaders from the local area who could teach a little bit of their expertise, whether it’s art or yoga or [to] tell their story of how they got into office,” she continued.
The week will also include a community improvement project that will be decided by the campers themselves.
Activities also will include art, meditation, leadership training, activism and learning about technologies such as laser cutting and 3-D printing, Turnbull said.
The camp, which is $445, is targeted to rising sixth through tenth graders and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for five days beginning July 31. Before and after care options will available but must be arranged ahead of time.
