Three more Silver Spring streets have been designated as Shared Streets beginning today, Aug. 28 under the county Department of Transportation’s Temporary Neighborhood Greenways program.
Shared Streets are intended to make designated roads friendlier to walkers, bicyclists and other non-vehicle users.
The concept limits vehicular traffic to local traffic only, providing access to residents, service providers and deliveries as needed.
The latest streets to become part of the program are:
- Greenwood Avenue in Long Branch, for a half mile between Kennebec Avenue and just south of Piney Branch Road
- Kennebec Avenue for 0.4 miles between Sligo Creek Parkway and Long Branch Trail, and
- Sudbury Road along 0.7 miles between Plymouth Street and the northern terminus just south of Franklin Avenue.
Grove Street between Bonifant Street and Sligo Avenue was the first Silver Spring road to be designated for the program earlier this summer. Additional streets will be added to the program later this year, including Woodland Drive from Spring Street to Flora Lane and from Forest Glen Road to Amherst Avenue at Windham Lane.
“Neighborhood Greenways are a traffic calming and street improvement measure we have been working toward and that neighborhoods have asked us to consider for some time,” said MCDOT Director Chris Conklin in a press release. “The health crisis and related community requests inspired us to advance this concept as a part of Shared Streets, and we hope that these efforts support Montgomery County residents and their expressed desire for safe and socially distanced outdoor activity as we all do our best to stay active, connected and safe during COVID-19.”
