Police: Compromised Mail Collection Boxes in Silver Spring

The Montgomery County Police Department is warning residents of a possible compromise in security at USPS Mail Collection Boxes in Silver Spring.

From Detective Keven Argueta, Montgomery County Police Department via Nextdoor:

Hello, This is Det. Argueta with the MCPD. I am sending this message out to notify the residents of the specified area that I believe there is a compromise in security for the outside drop-off mailboxes (The blue boxes where you drop off your mail that is located outside of a post office). I’ve received reports of checks that have been stolen and fraudulently altered and cashed/deposited. I will make a post specifically about this crime to all of Silver Spring later this week or next but for now, I want to get the word out to NOT drop off your mail (especially checks) at the below-referenced drop-off mailboxes.

Affected Locations are drop off mailboxes located at:

  • East Indian Spring Dr/ Evergreen St
  • All boxes located nearby Eastern Middle School (E. Franklin Ave/ University Blvd)
  • All boxes nearby the YMCA (Colesville Rd)

I ask that you drop your mail off inside the post office at the drop off box inside because that is more secure, or another drop box at a different location. Thank you.

Note: You may report an incident of Vandalism to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service by submitting a vandalism complaint online or by phone at 1-877-876-2455 to report mail theft or a vandalism incident.
