The Maryland State Highway Administration is planning a major rehabilitation of the bridge carrying Seminary Road over the Beltway.
According to the SHA website, the project will completely replace the “structurally deficient” deck, replacing the deck, steel beams and making repairs to the piers and abutments as needed.
Notices of a final pre-construction public meeting about the project have been mailed to area residents. The meeting, which will not include a formal presentation, will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15 in the Silver Spring Civic Building, 1 Veterans Place.
Those interested in attending may come at any time during those hours to view maps and other exhibits and ask questions.
The bridge was built in 1964 and remains safe for travelers, SHA said, but the work is needed to extend the bridge’s life. The engineering phase of the project will cost an estimated $602,000.
The total estimated cost is not yet published on the SHA site. Work is scheduled to begin later this year.
