Recent Shooting Ruled a Homicide; Police Seek Information

Detectives from the Major Crimes Division are investigating a shooting that occurred in Silver Spring on March 3 that has now been ruled a homicide following the victim’s death.

The victim has been identified as Derek James McBrayer, age 40, of Old Georgetown Road in Bethesda. The shooting occurred in the 1000 block of Quebec Terrace, and officers responded to a report of the incident at about 5:39 p.m.

“Officers located McBrayer laying on the sidewalk, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his leg,” according to a press release. “Officers immediately applied tourniquets to McBrayer’s leg and Fire and Rescue personnel transported him to a local hospital; he died on March 10.”

The medical examiner performed an autopsy and ruled the death a “homicide by gunshot wound.”

Detectives determined the shooting occurred in the same area where the victim was found. Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots and seeing seven to eight males running from the area.
